Did you know that the majority of the waste found on Vancouver beaches is made up of items like cigarette butts, bottle caps and food wrappers? Many of these items are made from plastic and designed to be used just once and then thrown away. Whether plastic is intended to be recycled or sent to landfills the sad truth is that hundreds of thousands of tonnes of it end up in our environments every year - but it doesn't have to be this way!
On Saturday September 21st, Surfrider Foundation Vancouver will be cleaning up and sorting the waste collected at Third Beach for International Coastal Cleanup Day, and we need your help! Our cleanups are a fun and easy way to get involved and give back.
We will be giving away prizes from our Supporting Sponsor Mustang Survival!
You just have to sign our waiver here and show up.
You can help as a BEACH CLEANUP VOLUNTEER, we supply buckets and hand pickers, or you can bring your own (tongs work great too!). Alternatively, you can join us as a LITTER SORTER VOLUNTEER and help sort through what people bring back to us during this cleanup. As a litter sorter, this is a great way to learn not just about picking up litter, but also about sorting it into various categories for recycling and proper disposal education.
Safety First: We have a supply of buckets, work gloves, and pickers. But please bring your own gloves and equipment if you have it available! For safety reasons please wear closed toed shoes and always use a picker to sift through the sand to avoid sharp objects. If you come across any sharp or hazardous object, mark it and tell us, our team can handle the safe removal.
