The Team

We operate as an entirely volunteer-run chapter and hold monthly events throughout the year to educate and engage the Vancouver community on local threats to our urban coastline.

Meet the Team

  • Johnny Rodgers

    Johnny Rodgers

    CHAIR

I've been involved in supporting forest and marine ecosystem protection in BC since moving to the west coast after university. Vancouver's beaches, shorelines and oceans are an incredible privilege to enjoy. We have a responsibility to ensure that they continue to thrive for all the creatures that depend on them and for the generations ahead of us to inherit. Let's leave things better than we found them!

I split my time between Vancouver and Pemberton with my wife and two sons. I love spending time outdoors paddling, camping, hiking, biking, skiing, playing frisbee, or enjoying those sublime west coast sunsets and waves.

  • Jen Cochrane

    VICE CHAIR

Jen has always lived by the ocean, having spent time in Canada, Australia and England. She is a Divemaster and loves diving in our beautiful waters and frequent local sites in Howe Sound and on the Island.

Jen serves as the Fundraising Lead for the Surfrider Foundation Vancouver, where she passionately drives efforts to secure the resources necessary to support the foundation’s initiatives. With a background working in the corporate world (in HR & Business consulting), she is hoping she can put her skills and experience to work to protect where we play!

When not blowing bubbles underwater, Jen loves exploring the mountains with her painting set, finding the best cafe in a new exotic place, and hanging out with loved ones - the best of them all being her Aussie Shepherd Ollie.

  • Amarys Joseph

    SECRETARY

Having had the privilege to be born and raised in Vancouver, BC, I have always felt a deep connection with the ocean. I hold 2 Diplomas in Business Admin and Legal Admin, as well as completion of Paralegal Studies at Vancouver Community College. I am an Administrative Assistant for a Labour Union by day, full time mother by night, and swimmer whenever I get the chance. I hold 2 patents published on the internet for kids’ accessories. I made a strong career change recently and decided to prioritize my work life balance, part of that is doing things that feel good for the soul, which inspired me to be part of this amazing movement. I speak French fluently, mother was from Bordeaux, France and Father is from the Island of Trinidad located in the Caribbean.

Hobbies include performing arts, dancing, swimming, ghost hunting with my child at local haunted spots, beachcombing, stargazing and astrology.

  • Mariana Correia

    COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

Mariana has always lived close to the ocean — born in Portugal, living in Australia, and most recently settling on the west coast of Canada. Her deep connection to the ocean through surfing and surf photography inspired her to apply her experience to support Surfrider's mission.

As the Communications Director of our chapter, Mariana collaborates with our talented communications team to share our efforts, promote our campaigns and programs, and raise awareness of local challenges, bringing our community together to protect our coastline.

Outside of work, you’ll often find her exploring the coast, catching waves, practicing yoga, or diving into different arts and crafts projects.

  • Tom Yoo

    FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR

By day, Tom works in Healthcare IT but is also on the board for other nonprofits on the fundraising committee, expertly convincing people to part with their money—for a good cause, of course. With a knack for rallying donors and planning successful campaigns, helping to turn big dreams into real-world impact.

By night (or whenever he can escape), he’s off scuba diving in search of Nemo or hopping on a plane to his next adventure. Whether navigating deep waters or airport security lines, Tom thrives in high-pressure environments—especially if there’s free snacks involved.

Passionate about making a difference and exploring the world, Tom believes fundraising is a lot like scuba diving: stay calm, keep breathing, and always have a backup plan (preferably one that includes amazing beaches)!

  • Kate Smith

    TREASURER

Kate didn’t grow up near the ocean but she’s always been most happy spending time in the water. Working for years as a lifeguard and whitewater rafting guide, she saw firsthand the importance of protecting the waters where we live and play. Having now been in Vancouver for ten years, she’s experienced the magic that comes from living by the ocean and understands the importance of advocating for coastal health.

As a Treasurer for the Vancouver team, Kate works to keep the behind-the-scenes numbers in great shape and helps to ensure that our finances enable us to deliver impactful events and community projects.

Outside of work, she’s most likely to be hiking, camping, paddleboarding, or cycling which she believes are some of the best ways to explore and appreciate the beautiful coastlines in British Columbia.

  • Leslie Orzel

    VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Growing up near the Great Lakes and enjoying many family canoe trips, Leslie has always had a strong tie to water. Her passion for environmentalism led her to study environmental studies, and joining the Surfrider Vancouver team was the perfect way to give back to the local community while building new connections.

As the chapter’s Volunteer Coordinator, Leslie works to bring people and programs together. She’s always happy to hear from anyone looking to get involved—no commitment is too small!

Leslie loves spending time at the beach (especially anywhere along the Pacific Ocean), joining friends for the occasional yoga or fitness class, and getting outdoors, often hiking along the British Columbia coast whenever the opportunity arises.

  • Katelyn Bishop

    COMMUNICATIONS & DESIGN COORDINATOR

Katelyn fell in love with the wild & beautiful west coast immediately after moving to Vancouver 12 years ago. The mountains, oceans and forests are so special and she feels privileged to be able to spend time in them. Her dedication for environmentalism drove her to volunteer with Surfrider initially through beach cleanups, which quickly expanded into a more core volunteer position.

As Communications & Design Coordinator of the chapter, Katelyn works with Mariana and the rest of the communications team to create impactful visuals to help promote the events, campaigns and causes Surfrider Vancouver supports. A graphic designer by day, her creative skills are put to good use for a great cause.

Katelyn loves travelling, hiking, backcountry camping, skiing, walking along the seawall, and honing her skills at spotting whales, seals, and other marine life! Indoors she enjoys baking, board games, playing the piano & lounging with her partner and their cat Lola.

We believe that the best way to approach the global issue of marine pollution is through community engagement and education.

Large scale change will only be achieved through the actions taken by local communities: small pieces making up the whole jigsaw. We encourage the Vancouver community to come out on beach cleans, remove the trash from our beaches and engage with a like-minded, environmentally conscious community. Our chapter hosts five to six beach cleans a year on Vancouver’s most popular beaches. Alongside this, we hold movie nights, showcasing local and international environmental documentaries, and educational evenings with specialists in the scientific and environmental community. We have a core team of volunteers who run the chapter, with roles covering events, communications, chapter management, partnerships, finance, graphic design and much more.

Our capacity to achieve environmental victories grows stronger with every new volunteer that joins the crew! To find out how to get involved, please visit our volunteer page.
